I had a lot of expectations from this movie as thrillers are quite rare in Bollywood and also all my friends had praised this movie a lot. However it turned out to be just another Kahaani (story) with a good end !!
You must have read Jeffrey Archer's short stories ........ they generally involve a good storyline which warms your heart with a totally unexpected twist at the end !! Kahaani is just like that !! It is not a thriller because it just does not involve the heart racing pace or the edge of the seat factor !!
The story revolves around one Vidya Bagchi who lands in Kolkata to look for her husband, who had come to the city for an assignment but disappears soon after. She directly goes to the police station where she meets second officer Rana who becomes her companion for the rest of her search .She is soon led to believe that her husband looks like a guy named Milan Damji who is a terrorist responsible for the death of 200 metro commuters in Kolkata. She feels that if she locates Milan Damji, that's where her husband would be. If I say anything more about the storyline, it's probable that this post will be deleted since the end is a closely and fantastically guarded secret.
The whole movie rests on the shoulder of Vidya Balan and she carries it off well. All the emotions ; fear, love, happy, sad, cry are reflected brilliantly by her. If you ever see the movie again, try and focus on Rana this time and you will feel even he is a great actor, his expressions are good too. In short, all the actors in the movie are well casted and suit their roles except Khan who is a little too arrogant. I am assured that someone who is second in command at the Central Bureau of Investigation cannot behave like that.
The editing and the background score are also top class.
Like I said, the main problem is the pace. Although there are no songs in the movie and there are many interesting developments, it is not enough to keep you from looking at your watch to check the time. However it is a great advancement for the Hindi film industry, no doubt about that !!
Overall, a good story (and movie) with a great end. Don't go expecting a thriller, and you will like it even more !!
